To video or not to video?

This topic has been buzzing a lot in the Podcasting space. Many have reached out to me, wondering if adding video is the right move, no matter whether you’re just starting out or looking to grow your podcast. Some of you are eager to jump in and give video a try, while others feel overwhelmed, reluctant or confused.

Wherever you are on your podcasting journey: Any decision you make about your podcast should align with YOU and your goals.

In this edition, I’ll guide you through 3 steps to help you make an informed decision.

But first, context: Why are we even talking so much about video right now? Platforms like YouTube and Spotify are promoting video, suggesting it opens new doors to connect with audiences and grow your show.

Video clips can boost visibility, which audio alone might not and personally, I’ve used short video clips that I post on social media for years to promote my audio-only podcast. It’s great for marketing, but this is not what we are talking about here.

There has been increased debate about creating video versions of your podcast, even more so as there have been many claims on how this would positively impact the success of your podcast.

But here’s the (important!) thing: Creating a video version of your podcast doesn’t guarantee success. Just like audio, video only works if it delivers value to your audience. Video is not magic, it’s a huge commitment. High-quality video production means considering lighting, setting, and even whether you look as tired as you feel.

Adding video takes time, effort, and possibly financial investment.

So before you move forward and jump into video, ask yourself:

1.) Do I have the bandwidth and budget for this?

Ask yourself: will adding video to my podcast overwhelm me or stop me from starting/continuing my podcast?

If video feels like too much, skip it.

You’re already doing something amazing by sharing your voice. Focus on audio-first, and if you’re curious about video, start small, like recording short marketing video clips to promote your show.

2.) Consider your audience:

How do they consume my podcast? Are they asking me for video? Would it truly enhance their experience?

Some listeners don’t want video. They love audio’s flexibility, whether they’re commuting, folding laundry, or multitasking. I’m an audio-only girl myself. I never sit down to watch a podcast.

Think of video as a bonus, not a requirement. Most importantly, forget what ‘the experts’ or ‘the algorithms’ say, focus on YOU. Which brings me to the last, and most important step.

3.) Ask yourself: Do I want to show up on video?

Am I willing to show up on video? Am I feeling comfortable with that even? Are my guests guests comfortable with being filmed?

Forget what ‘the experts’ or ‘the algorithms’ say, focus on YOU.

If you want to dive even deeper into this topic, with examples from both a producer’s and a listener’s perspective, start listening to the episode now. I’m sure it will help clear up some of the confusion you might have about whether or not to offer a video version of your podcast to your audience.
